Project Description:
This project covers the structural renovation, seismic retrofitting, and vertical extension of four mixed-use buildings in Zurich. The project preserved heritage architecture, optimized floor plans, and partially maintained tenant-operations throughout construction. Different engineering methods were applied based on each building’s age, structure, and seismic requirements to ensure safety and sustainability.
Judges Comments
This ambitious rehabilitation project upgraded a series of residential and commercial buildings in the heart of Zurich through a carefully orchestrated sequence of seismic retrofitting, foundation works, and envelope conservation. Carried out while the buildings remained in use, the intervention preserved the historic fabric and extended the buildings' useful life through targeted structural enhancements. A model of discreet engineering and urban sustainability, the project blends technical precision with civic sensitivity and exemplifies rehabilitation at its most integrated and human-focused.
