Barmouth Metallic Bridge Replacement Project Description: The Grade II* listed Barmouth Viaduct is a significant landmark and access route. The project was to replace the metallic superstructure, reusing and refurbishing the existing substructure. A unique solution was developed addressing the location’s specific challenges whilst highly visible to the public. The viaduct has been fully restored and protected for generations to come. Judges Comments This celebrated viaduct on the Welsh coast has been sensitively restored through the full replacement of its early 20th-century metallic spans, while retaining and strengthening the original substructure. An innovative construction sequence, including the use of the new spans to support the old bridge during removal, allowed for efficient installation with minimal disruption. Working within an ecologically protected estuary and with high public visibility, the team delivered a resilient, heritage-sensitive solution that restores a vital community link and celebrates the character of the original structure.
