Project Description:

Kai Tak Sports Park spread over 28ha, is a transformative redevelopment of the former Kai Tak Airport into a premier venue for sports, entertainment and leisure. The heart of this complex is the iconic 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium, designated the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ seamlessly integrating structural and architectural features.

Judges Comments

This 50,000-seat stadium is the focal point of the new Kai Tak Sports Park, and the project team had to address many engineering challenges to achieve a functional world class facility to be known as the Pearl of the Orient. The structure includes a large deployable roof, with two 2400-ton separate structures spanning 144m between rails supported by heavy steel trusses spanning the full 183m length of the stadium. The heavy weight of the structure was necessary to meet stringent noise restriction requirements when the roof is closed.
