Project Description:
The New Pamban Railway Bridge replaces the historic 100 years-old bridge, in Tamil Nadu, India, in one of the harshest marine corrosive environments in the world. The tower-drive vertical lift movable section, a 77 m long double truss steel span, answers the local demand of a robust and durable structure.
Judges Comments
Driven by the need to survive some of the harshest marine conditions in the world, with cyclones and earthquakes commonplace, the designers worked hard to produce a durable and economic replacement opening bridge on this important railway crossing. The lifting bridge replaces an historic double leaf rolling bascule and is a simple truss span. All materials and details had to be considered from the point of view of the harsh exposed environment, and the lifting machinery is placed at the top of the towers, well above the typical wave splash zone.
