To provide a clear navigation opening of 50m, the project team produced a double-leaf bascule bridge with a span of 64m, trunnion to trunnion. The bridge carries two lanes of highway traffic in each direction plus a footway and cycle track. Being intended to minimise disruption to highway and river traffic, it is designed to open and close within 90 seconds. It is expected to do so 90 times a day. Bridge construction involved only three 72-hour river possessions to minimise disruption to river traffic.
