Mobile roof at Roland-Garros

Project Description:

A newly installed roof now shelters the existing court, featuring a cutting-edge retractable membrane system integrated with a steel truss frame supported by four corner towers. The lightweight and translucent membrane, stretching 45m and extending up to 90m when deployed, delivers both visual elegance and structural efficiency. To reduce the carbon impact of the steel, the project team focused on structural refinement and engaged in strategic collaboration with suppliers.

Judges Comments

A new roof has been constructed over the existing Court 2 at Roland-Garros, combining an innovative mobile folding membrane system with a surrounding steel truss frame supported on four corner towers. The lightness of the membrane roof, spanning 45m and unfolding over 90m, offers an elegant and structurally efficient response. The steel frame's carbon footprint went through several stages for optimisation, including extensive up-front studies to minimize material usage. The project's structural intervention has almost no impact on the existing structure.
