THE IABSE Young Engineers Colloquium East Asia |
DESIGN COMPETITION
Introduction
The design project entails the development of a conceptual design for a lookout platform and associated elevated access walkway at a touristic destination in Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
The objective of the project is to establish a new tourist attraction for pedestrians and visitors that would enable them to closely enjoy the beautiful natural landscape of the area.
Download the dwg file (Basemap.dwg) with the topography of the area. In addition, if deemed necessary, participants can use public information available, shown in Additional References.
Design Brief
The design should include an elevated walkway through the low height natural vegetation, viewpoint(s), and shaded resting area(s). Additional features can be added for the visitors willing to enjoy a more thrilling experience.
The structure must connect to the existing pedestrian areas at one or more locations, defined by the participants, depending on the proposed general arrangement.
All the non-built-up areas can be considered as available for construction, but the impact on the existing vegetation, in particular larger trees, should be minimized during construction and operation.
Disturbance to surrounding tourist attractions, building and facilities should be kept to a minimum.
Design Basis
Type of structure: Elevated walkway and viewpoints for pedestrian traffic
Minimum functional width: 4m
Pedestrian live load: 5 kPa
Maximum peak wind velocity: 80 m/s
Construction materials and grades: no restriction
Ground condition: competent rock between 0-3m depth
Any other design requirements can be based on engineering judgment by the participants, or design codes like HKSDM
Evaluation Criteria
Response to the Design Brief
