U81 Bridge over Nordstern Interchange, Germany

Project Description:

With the construction of the Metro line U81, Düsseldorf Airport is to be connected to the existing metro network, thereby improving public transportation. The first construction phase of the new double-track U81 runs from the existing Freiligrathplatz station to Düsseldorf Airport. A central component of the first 1.9 km-long construction phase is the crossing of the heavily frequented Nordstern interchange. As a result of the project requirements, a bridge has been developed that leads over the interchange in a 90° curve with a radius of 245.5 meters and a total length of 441.2 meters. Through the concept of a “breathing bridge,” an equally attractive and innovative structure has been realized – a unique feature in railway bridge construction.

Judges Comments

The Metro Line U81 will link Düsseldorf Airport seamlessly to the city’s network, boosting mobility. Its signature feature is the striking Nordstern ‘breathing bridge’, which is a 441 metre steel curve soaring 90° above a major interchange, showcasing bold engineering and a fresh vision for modern urban transit.
