Albi Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge, France Project Description: This project shows that the impact of the new infrastructure over the Tarn goes well beyond the solution to a problem of mobility. It restores the meaning to an urban situation that had been spoiled by preceding interventions and the vicissitudes of urban history. It also provides a new visual experience to people crossing the Tarn, with new perspectives of the city that reinforce its historic character. Judges Comments To improve active travel mobility, the city of Albi desired a new footbridge cantilevered from an existing railway viaduct, crossing the Tarn River. This bridge which was the winning design in an international competition subtly interacts with the viaduct while providing new and exciting viewpoints on the UNESCO city centre and the surrounding valley.
