M4 Metro to Sydhavn, Copenhagen South Station, Denmark

Project Description:

The transformation of Copenhagen South Station exemplifies structural excellence through the successful integration of new underground infrastructure within a live and historically complex railway environment. The project demonstrates how careful engineering judgement, robust structural design, and precise execution can enable major interventions without compromising operational safety, while keeping existing infrastructure operational and thereby minimizing disruption of traffic for the benefit of the society.

Judges Comments

Copenhagen South station has been transformed from a transport corridor with four railway lines into a fully integrated station area, where the Copenhagen Metro meets two commuter train lines and two regional rail lines. This complex project has enabled the station to operate as a cohesive transportation hub offering seamless flow and transfer opportunities.
