Tomei Tamagawa Bridge Renewal, Japan Project Description: The Tomei Tamagawa Bridge renewal project was the first deck replacement project on the 6 lanes section with highest traffic volume in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Although the bridge had 100,000 vehicles per day, the deck replacement work was done while maintaining 6 lane availability with various new technologies. The economic benefits brought about by new method are immeasurable. This project will be the pioneer of deck replacement on heavy traffic routes. Judges Comments The Tomei Tamagawa Bridge is a steel girder bridge on the six-lane expressway section in the Tokyo Metropolitan area with a daily traffic volume of 100,000 vehicles. The concrete deck was replaced in five transverse segments with new technologies which contributed to maintaining lane availability throughout and minimizing traffic disruption.
