The Canopy

Project Description:

The Canopy, developed over five years through academia-industry collaboration, is the world's first 3D concrete-printed structure using subtracted milling. It enables flexible, precise, and sustainable manufacturing, reducing waste, cost, and time. Its modular design supports disassembly and reuse while integrating functional features, showcasing advanced digital fabrication technologies.

Judges Comments

This research-driven demonstrator project showcases the possibilities of hybrid digital construction, combining 3D concrete printing with CNC milling. The canopy roof features variable shell thickness, post-tensioned joints, and dovetail interlocks, while the hollow printed column integrates structural and service functions. The entire assembly demonstrates how structural form and fabrication precision can merge into a single digitally enabled process.
