Task Group 6.2

Disaster Debris Management

Mission Statement/Objectives
The impacts of disaster waste management systems, in particular - economic and social impacts will be investigated in the perspective of sustainability. The environmental impacts of the disaster are substantial. If poorly managed, the waste can have significant environmental and public health impacts and can affect the overall recovery process. The main objective of this project is to develop a risk-based framework for debris management system.

Scope & Limitation
Types of debris considered in this Task Group will include structural materials (e.g., concrete, bricks, and wood), rubbles of road infrastructure, household waste, and hazardous waste from industrial chemical. Debris caused by earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, storm surge and flood will be taken into consideration. The project shall aim to develop a database necessary for disaster debris management based on the literature review and past disaster lessons.

Expected Project Output
The Task Group plans to publish an SED book, and perhaps set up a workshop relevant to the project results.
