From January 14 to 16, 2026, delegation of the Russian National Group of IABSE were invited by the Chinese National Group of IABSE to visit Tongji University in Shanghai, China. During the visit, Dr. Nikolai Kozak, Vice-Chair of the Russian Group, and Dr. Sergei Poliakov, Secretary of the Russian Group, held fruitful meetings with Prof. Limin Sun, the Chair of the Chinese Group, Dr. Ye Xia, the Group Secretary, Dr. Mingming Song, and other members.

On January 15, a seminar was held under the auspices of the Chinese Group of IABSE. During the seminar, the Russian delegation presented the current challenges in Russian bridge engineering, introduced their research centers and teams – the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering and the Siberian Bridge Research Institute - and showcased their latest scientific projects.

Subsequent working meetings focused on discussions regarding potential areas of cooperation between the two National Groups of IABSE. These discussions covered the organization of scientific events as well as joint educational, research, and engineering projects. It is anticipated that some of these proposals may be implemented as early as this year.

Seminar on 'Life-Cycle Reliability of Bridges' 

   

  

On 22 November 2025, the IABSE Russian Group successfully marked its relaunch with its first in-person welcome seminar on the topic of 'Life Cycle Reliability of Bridges - First Welcome Russian National Group Seminar'. The main goal of the event was to foster a genuine and open-minded engineering discussion dedicated to bridges—and it successfully achieved just that! Here is a short glimpse (video): Click Here.

Onsite, over 30 engineers and researchers met at the "bridgest" Center of Competence "Bridges" LLC office, at St. Petersburg, Russia. More than 50 participants joined online from around the world joined remotely, including IABSE President Dr Harshavardhan Subbarao and Vice-President Jose Campos e Matos. See more photos here.

The discussion was so engaging that the event ran longer than the planned four hours, and featured three sessions of lively debate and knowledge sharing, offering a deep dive into the challenges of bridge life-cycle reliability. The main goal of the seminar was to introduce the Russian engineering community to the mission and objectives of IABSE and the National Group, as well as to outline promising directions for the scientific and practical work of the Russian NG.
