Tongji University visits IABSE Secretariat
On 23 July 2025, as coordinated with the Chinese National Group and Prof. Ye Xia, a group of 30 students and three professors from Tongji University visited the IABSE Secretariat in Zurich to learn about international collaborations and the role of IABSE in spreading knowledge and connecting leading experts in the field of structural engineering worldwide.
Executive Director Chep Uytiepo discussed about the association, conferences, and awards, as well as the upcoming IABSE Academy, which is set to launch soon. He also encouraged the students to join the association as a 'Student member' (below 27 years).
Publications and Communications Manager Brindarica Bose briefed the students about IABSE's publications, webinars, Task Groups, and encouraged them to follow the Young Engineers Programme and take part in the upcoming Young Engineers Colloquiums.
It was interesting to note that the visiting students were focusing on exploring AI for Engineering in Practice. IABSE has a Task Group 3.10 dedicated to this topic and is hosting a survey for structural engineers to provide feedback on the role of AI in their work.

Finally after the Covid 19 lockdown and associated restrictions got over, we were able to organise the Plaque unveiling ceremony for the 2020 and 2021 Outstanding Structure Award winners in China. On 8 June, the IABSE Plaque unveiling ceremony took place for the 2021 IABSE Outstanding Structure Award winner (category: Building or other Structure): Beijing Daxing International Airport Terminal China. This structure won for its unique combination of architecture and structural engineering, which seamlessly integrates seismic and vibration control into the design. The Plaque was unveiled by the President of IABSE, Tina Vejrum, who travelled from Denmark for this occasion. Present at this event were the Chair of the OStrA Committee 2021, Naeem Hussain; past President of IABSE, Yaojun Ge; the Chinese National Group Chair and Secretary, Limin Sun and Ye Xia, and other dignitaries. The Plaque was unveiled during the ceremony, which was followed by a speech, and interviews. The plaque will be mounted/displayed on the structure soon.
The Beijing Daxing International Airport Terminal is a unique structure with high architectural quality both with respect to the exterior and interior. The 8 C-shaped columns in the central area of the terminal of the Beijing Daxing International Airport Terminal are organically combined with the roof structure, which gives it an amazing architectural look. This terminal is the first completed project in the world that integrated high-speed rail transit and terminal, and the vibration caused by the high-speed trains is also within permissible limits. The terminal is 996m long from North to South and 1144m wide from east to west. The floor of this terminal is around 800,000m2 with a direct roof projection area of 350,000m2. This unique engineered structure was a collaboration between the architect Zaha Hadid and the engineering team.
On 10 June, the IABSE Plaque unveling ceremony took place for the 2020 IABSE Outstanding Structure Award winner presented to the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge, China. This structure won for being the world’s longest sea-crossing link and consists of reclamations, artificial islands, immersed tunnel, marine viaducts and cable-stay bridges. It can be seen from land, sea and air and its design has been driven by aesthetics, environmental, engineering and durability aspects.
At 55km, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) is the world’s longest sea-crossing link and consists of reclamations, artificial islands, immersed tunnel, marine viaducts and cable-stay bridges. It can be seen from land, sea and air and its design has been driven by aesthetics, environmental, engineering and durability aspects. Significant use has been made of large pre-fabricated elements to achieve quality and construction speed. HZMB will improve connections between 11 cities to create an economic and business hub in the Greater Bay Area and significantly reduce vehicular journey time between Hong Kong and Zhuhai from four to one hour.
