Welcome!Message from the President, IABSE |
Dear Colleagues,
It is my great pleasure to warmly invite you to the IABSE Symposium 2027 in Guwahati, India, to be held from 22–24 April 2027 at the Mayfair Spring Valley Resort. Organised by the Indian National Group of IABSE (ING-IABSE), this symposium will bring together leading engineers, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across the world to exchange knowledge, experience, and innovation in structural engineering.
The theme of the Symposium, “Structural Failures – Causes, Investigation, Resilience, Mitigation & Standardisation,” addresses one of the most critical challenges facing our profession today. As our infrastructure grows in scale and complexity, it becomes increasingly important to understand the root causes of failures, adopt advanced investigation techniques, enhance resilience in structural systems, and strengthen mitigation strategies and standards. These efforts are fundamental to ensuring safety, reliability, and sustainability in the built environment.
Through plenary lectures, keynote addresses, technical sessions, and case studies, the Symposium will provide a valuable global platform to share lessons learned and explore forward-looking approaches for more resilient infrastructure. The event will also feature exhibitions and a vibrant programme dedicated to young engineers, including interactive sessions, model-making competitions, and speed design challenges. These initiatives aim to foster creativity, encourage innovation, and provide valuable opportunities for young professionals to engage directly with global experts and contribute actively to the profession’s advancement. Guwahati, located on the banks of the majestic Brahmaputra River and known as the gateway to Northeast India, offers a unique and inspiring setting. Its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and evolving infrastructure landscape make it an ideal host city for meaningful international dialogue and collaboration.
I warmly encourage engineers, researchers, manufacturers, contractors, suppliers and professionals from around the world to participate in this important Symposium and contribute through abstracts, papers, and discussions.
Your participation will play a vital role in advancing our collective understanding of structural performance, safety, and resilience.
I look forward to welcoming you to Guwahati in April 2027 for an engaging and enriching IABSE gathering.
With best wishes,

Dr. Harshavardhan Subbarao
President,
International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE)
On behalf of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) we take great pleasure to invite you to Guwahati, India, for the IABSE Symposium on the main theme “Structural Failures - Causes, Investigation, Resilience, Mitigation & Standardization” from 22nd April (Thursday) to 24th April (Saturday), 2027. The Symposium is organized by the Indian National Group of the IABSE and the Symposium will take place at the Mayfair Spring Valley Resort, Guwahati. The main goal of the Symposium is to create a forum for the debate on structural failures around the globe, focusing on forensic investigation & diagnosis, analyzing the root causes of collapses; brainstorming preventive methodologies & mitigation by developing strategies and methods to avoid failures during the entire life cycle of a structure, including in-service monitoring; reviewing how forensic studies should influence the development of building codes and the professional standard of care for engineers; analyzing the role of human error, including mistakes in design, construction, and maintenance, which constitute a high percentage of failures, rather than just random events; and addressing failures that occur during construction. The symposium will bridge the gap between engineering theory and practice, addressing both technical and organizational, social, and environmental causes of failures. We invite the world’s engineering fraternity, leading scientists, academicians, industry professionals, eminent speakers, and forensic structural engineering experts to one platform to share their experiences with their colleagues and friends to have unique open discussions and Forums on what the future holds for our future generations. Consultants, Planners, Contractors, Owners, Architects, Associated Experts, Researchers and Practitioners will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences on planning, structural design, construction and maintenance issues, future growth and sustainability. We hope that this IABSE Symposium Guwahati 2027 will be an important international event for all those associated with different types of structures above and below the ground. Technical visits to interesting projects and to research facilities are planned during the Symposium, and are open for accompanying persons. More detailed information will be available in Final Invitation & at the Symposium website: www.iabse.org/Guwahati2027. | Mr. V.K. Rajawat Chairman of the Organising Committee
