Task Group 2.5

Parametric Design

Mission Statement/Objectives

Parametric design, as a methodology, utilizes variables, their relationships, and algorithms to systematically generate structural solutions. It involves the application of computer techniques to define a range of design parameters, including material properties, geometries, and load conditions. Through iterative exploration and analysis of numerous design iterations, the goal is to achieve desired performance criteria, cost-effectiveness, and aesthetic considerations. This approach empowers engineers to efficiently uncover innovative structural forms, facilitating the creation of visual pleasant and efficient designs maximizing resource utilization. However, the practice of parametric design demands expertise in the field to ensure alignment with safety standards, building codes, and real-world structural performance expectations. Experienced engineers are essential for making informed decisions, accurately interpreting results, and applying their judgment to anticipate unforeseen issues in complex structures.

Scope & Limitation

The main objective is to compile an exhaustive review of the "state of the art" in parametric design applied to structural projects, along with the identification of emerging trends in its application in professional practice. Additionally, we aim to establish a general methodology that outlines the typical workflow when employing this tool in real projects and defines the systematic approach necessary to ensure the quality of the final product. This approach will allow for a comprehensive understanding of current best practices as well as anticipating future directions in parametric structural design, thereby promoting effective integration of this methodology into contemporary structural engineering.

Expected Project Output

• A set of webinars on the use of parametric design methodologies and tools

• A special session in an IABSE Conference/Congress/Symposium
