Ian Liddell and Paul Westbury, UK
At the Opening Ceremony of the 16th IABSE Congress in Lucerne, on September 18, 2000, Mr Klaus Ostenfeld, President of IABSE, presented the 1999 Outstanding Paper Award to Messrs Ian Liddell and Paul Westbury, UK, for their Paper
'Design and Construction of the Millennium Dome'
published in Structural Engineering International, August 1999.
The Paper presents the design and the construction of the Millennium Dome, demonstrating the innovations of fabric and tensioned cable structures leading to the roof structure of the Millennium Dome. The Dome is the largest roof of its kind anywhere in the world with elements of innovation in structural form, use of materials, or construction details. The structural system is capable of further expansion to cover even larger areas, allowing the possibility of building covered cities in extreme climate zones.
The Outstanding Paper was selected by an international committee, chaired this year by Professor Joerg Schneider, Switzerland. The Award is presented by the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering in recognition of one article per year published in "Structural Engingeering International", thus encouraging and rewarding contributions of highest quality.
