Dr. Andrea Frangi and Prof. Mario Fontana, Switzerland
Dr. Manabu Ito, President of IABSE, presented the 2003 IABSE Outstanding Paper Award to Dr Andrea Frangi and Prof. Mario Fontana for their paper
'Elasto-Plastic Model for Timber-Concrete Composite Beams with Ductile Connection'
published in Structural Engineering International, February 2003.
The awarded article describes an elasto-plastic model for timber-concrete composite beams with ductile connection. The paper studies the elastic behaviour and modelling of timber-concrete composite beams. It develops an elasto-plastic method for timber-concrete composite beams with ductile connection. It is compared to test results.
The IABSE Outstanding Paper Award is presented each year by IABSE in recognition of one article published in "Structural Engineering International", thus encouraging and rewarding contributions of the highest quality. This time the Outstanding Paper Award Committee was chaired by Professor Hakan Sundquist from Sweden.
Dr Frangi born in 1971, received his civil engineering degree and his PhD, both from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. For two years he worked for a structural engineering company in Canada. Back in Switzerland he is involved in teaching and research at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. His research interests include the behaviour of timber-concrete composite elements at ambient temperature and in fire.
Prof. Dr Fontana, born 1954, received his civil engineering and PhD degrees from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. After 8 years in consulting and construction firms he is back at the Institute of Technology Zurich as a professor for structural engineering. His main research interests include steel timber, composite structures and fire.
