John W. Fisher, USA

On the occasion of the Annual Meetings of IABSE Mr Klaus Ostenfeld, President of IABSE, presented the 2001 International Award of Merit, to Dr John W. Fisher on March 21, 2001 in Malta " in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of the knowledge of fatigue and brittle fracture of steel structure failures and to the application of scientific research and technological developments in the fields of civil engineering structures".

John W. Fisher received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Washington University in 1956 and a M.S. and Ph.D. from Lehigh University in 1958 and 1964, respectively. In 1988 he was named to the Joseph T. Stuart Chair in Civil Engineering. John W. Fisher has been Professor of Civil Engineering at Lehigh University since 1969. He is a specialist in structural connections, the fatigue and fracture resistance of riveted, bolted and welded structures and the behaviour and design of composite steel-concrete, members. He has been engaged in over 100 projects in these areas since 1961, supervising 80 graduate research assistants on these projects. Dr Fisher is Co-Director of the Advanced Technology for Large Structural systems (ATLSS). He is the principal investigator for several ongoing research projects on the fatigue and fracture evaluation of welded high performance steel and stainless steel members, and on means to repair and improve fatigue resistance. Dr Fisher was a member of the New York Panel that was established to recommend a solution for the problems associated with the Williamsburg Bridge in 1978 - 88. He also served as a member of the New York State Bridge Safety Assurance Task force 1990- 1998. He has published a dozen of books and 230 reports and articles, which have appeared in scientific and engineering journals.

Dr. Fisher has received numerous awards and recognitions: he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, an Honorary Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Corresponding Member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences. He was named on the 125 engineers identified by ENR editors for outstanding contributions to the construction industry since 1874.
