John C. Badoux, Switzerland
Mr. John C. Badoux was appointed Honorary Member at the Closing Ceremony of the Congress of the 'International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering'. President Klaus H. Ostenfeld presented the distinction to Professor Badoux in "appreciation of his eminent services rendered with devotion to the Association in several committees over many years and particularly as Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Congress "Structural Engineering for Meeting Urban Transportation Challenges".
A Swiss citizen, John C. Badoux was born in 1935. He gained his degree in civil engineering in 1958 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. After one year at the Technical University, Hannover, he went to Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA, where he received his PhD in 1965.
Mr. Badoux started his professional career as chief engineer for prestressed, precast concrete constructions with a Swiss company. From 1962-1967 he was involved in design and construction projects for private firms and the American Government. From 1967 until today he has been Technical Advisor and Expert for over one hundred construction projects in Switzerland and other countries. He is expert for the investigation of several structural failures and accidents in construction and industrial complexes.
Mr. Badoux has alongside to his practical experience an outstanding career in teaching and research, at Lehigh University, at the University of California, Davis, USA, and Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland. Mr Badoux was the Director of the Institute for steel structures (ICOM). From 1992 to 2000 he was President of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland.
Professor Badoux has been extremely active during his whole career in learned societies and professional associations. He has been President of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences and the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects. He has also been highly engaged in different activities and committees of IABSE. At present Mr Badoux is Chairman of the Council of the IABSE Foundation for the Advancement of Structural Engineering.
