HELPING HAND TO THE VICTIMS OF TURKEY AND SYRIA EARTHQUAKE
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake and its numerous aftershocks caused a dreadful death toll, not only due to the power of the tremor but also because of the vulnerability of the built environment in the affected area. The region had not experienced major earthquakes in the last 200 years, and there was a lack of preventive actions and mitigation strategies. The earthquake occurred in the early hours of the morning when people were sleeping, adding to the human tragedy. The location of the quake zone and the political situation in Syria further complicated the rescue efforts.
In addition to the currently undergoing discussions on how IABSE can effectively help by providing technical know-how that can be more useful in the future phases of reconstruction and prevention. We feel the need to provide concrete support to the affected populations now. Therefore, we are initiating a fundraiser to support the emergency in Turkey and Syria.
We will transfer all the funds received by IABSE by 31 March 2023 to the Swiss Red Cross, directly involved in the management of the most pressing needs. Swiss Red Cross is well established in responding to disasters and are in the best position to reach people on the ground.
