Structures for the Future - The Search for Quality
IABSE Symposium Report - Rio de Janeiro 1999

In designing and building Structures for the Future, structural engineers have to constantly keep in mind the Search for Quality. This reaffirms the great responsibility that structural engineers carry, to build safe and durable structures to serve society.

Ten sessions addressed the Symposium's theme. They were introduced by keynote lectures:

Durability and Robustness / Aesthetics / Sustainability / Maintenance and Reliability / Monitoring / Serviceability / Design Criteria / Rehabilitation and Preservation / Information Technology / Construction

Keynote Lectures:

  • Creation, Maintenance and Management of the World's Assets: Appropriate Quality and Technology for the Future
    Peter Head, UK
  • Aesthetics and Structural Design
    Armando Rito, Portugal
  • Sustainability and Civil Engineering: From Concept to Action
    Jorge Vanegas, USA
  • Life-Cycle Behaviour of Reinforced Concrete Structures; What do we need to know?
    Kynichi Maruyama, Japan
  • Quality Assessment and Damage Detection by Monitoring
    Helmut Wenzel, Austria
  • Performance-Based Design of Structures for the Future
