Message from the President
In 1996, when attending the IABSE Congress in Copenhagen, some of the largest projects ever, were under construction in Denmark. Ten years later, the Danish Group of IABSE is organising another Conference, this time on 'Operation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Large Infrastructure Projects, Bridges and Tunnels'. Without doubt, Copenhagen is a perfect setting for this conference. Much experience has been gained and is now available on these topics that need to be shared among designers, contractors, operators, suppliers, government agencies and researchers to the benefit of the profession and the society at large.
It is my pleasure to invite you to attend this conference, to meet with international experts and discuss a number of im-portant topics within the theme of Management and Planning of Operation and Maintenance, as well as to learn through the presentation of Case Studies. In addition, this conference will provide a valuable opportunity for international networking and the exchange of current information.
It is also my particular wish to again encourage young engineers to attend and meet experienced colleagues from around the world, while at the same time taking advantage of the Young Engineers Programme offered by IABSE and the organiser.
Promising Technical Visits to the Great Belt Link and the Little Belt Bridge or the Oeresund Link and the Copenhagen Metro will be organised for both the participants and accompanying persons.
There will be an attractive Social Programme for participants and accompanying persons. Copenhagen is a delightful place to visit. From its origin as a humble fishing village, to the glittering capital of the Danish Empire, and its current position as part of one of the most dynamic regions in Europe, there are many facets of Copenhagen's history to be dis-covered.
IABSE is grateful to its Danish Group, in co-operation with the sponsors, for organising this promising Conference, to be held in May 2006. I look forward to meeting you in Copenhagen.
Prof. Manfred A. Hirt
President of IABSE
