John E. Breen, USA

 
   At the Opening Session of the 16th IABSE Congress in Lucerne, on September 18, 2000, Mr Klaus H. Ostenfeld, President of IABSE, presented Professor John E. Breen with the 2000 International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering "in recognition of his outstanding achievements in teaching and research in structural engineering and his eminent contributions to international professional cooperation".

John Breen graduated from Marquette University and Missouri University and received his Ph.D. from Texas University. He served as a construction engineering officer in the US Navy, he is a faculty member at the University of Missouri, and currently holds the Nasser I. Al-Rashid Chair at Texas University at Austin.

He has made significant contributions in structural concrete research, winning numerous awards for applications such as slender column design, reinforcement development, general structural integrity, post-tensioned anchorage zones, segmental bridge design and construction, and corrosion protection of cable stays. An Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), he has chaired the ACI 318 Building Code Committee and IABSE Working Commission 3.

Professor Breen has consulted on a number of major building and bridge projects. He has been elected to both the US National Academy of Engineering and the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences, and has received the FIP Medal.
