Javier Manterola, Spain

Professor Javier Manterola, Spain, has received the 2006 Award of Merit in Structural Engineering "in recognition of his major contributions to structural engineering, particularly in the field of analysis, design and education of bridge engineering in Spain”. President Manfred A. Hirt presented the Award to Javier Manterola at the Opening Session of the IABSE Symposium ‘Responding to Tomorrow’s Challenges in Structural Engineering’ on September 13, 2006.

Javier Manterola graduated in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnical University of Madrid in 1962. He dedicated the first two years of his professional career to design and analysis of
buildings and industrial parks in the design office of a construction company.

In 1964 Javier Manterola obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnical University of Madrid and began to work at the Eduardo Torroja Institute as a researcher in the field of punching shear of slabs, bending and shear failure of girders, and mechanisms of movement redistribution in the deck of prefabricated girder bridges.

In 1966 he joined Carlos Fernández Casado as engineer and partner, where he has been working up to date and holds the position of President/C.E.O. For forty years the main line of his work has been the analysis and design, as well as construction counselling for bridges and unique buildings. Since 1976 Javier Manterola is Professor for Bridge Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid.

Javier Manterola has participated in more than 230 projects in Spain, Europe and Latin America, including: office buildings, football stadiums, industrial buildings, bus and metro stations. The activity he has developed to mastery and for which he is known internationally is the design of over 200 bridges and viaducts, many of which are considered as the best structural realisations in Spain in the past 25 years.

Javier Manterola has been conferred numerous national and international awards. He has published many articles in Spanish and international journals and has collected his experience and knowledge on bridges in a two-volume book, “Bridges - Notes for their Design, Analysis and Construction”.
