Professor Leroy Gardner, UK
The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) awards the IABSE Prize 2017, to Prof. Leroy Gardner ‘in recognition of his outstanding contributions to structural engineering in the areas of structural steel research, code development and teaching’.
The Prize honours an IABSE Member early in his or her career for outstanding achievements in structural engineering. Following graduation from the University of Southampton in 1998 with a first class degree in Civil Engineering and as the top ranked student, Leroy went on to study at Imperial College London for an MSc (Distinction) and PhD. Since then, he has followed an academic career from Lecturer to Professor at Imperial, while retaining close links with practice through consultancy work, training courses and the Institutions. He is the youngest ever Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and having spent five years as Director of Undergraduate Studies, now serves as Director of Research.
His principal research interests lie in the areas of structural testing numerical modelling and the development of design guidance for steel structures. In particular, through his involvement in European and other research projects, he has devised methods for designing with non-linear materials and has contributed to the formulation of design rules for Eurocode 3. His research now features in UK, US, European and Chinese codes of practice.
Leroy leads an active research group in Structural Engineering, and has supervised over 30 PhD students. He is an inspiration to his students, 15 of whom have gone on to pursue academic careers themselves, and in 2015, he was awarded the President’s Prize for Excellence in Research Supervision at Imperial. Leroy has co-authored 4 textbooks, 7 book chapters and over 250 technical papers. He also has won a number of research prizes, has given invited and keynote lectures around the world, and is Editor-in-Chief of two International structural engineering journals.
Leroy was awarded an Imperial College Excellence in Teaching Prize in 2008. He is a Fellow of both the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (FIStructE), and is highly sought after as an expert consultant, and chairs and serves on many UK, European and International technical committees. In particular, he is the UK representative for the development of Eurocode 3, and he chairs the UK Mirror Group.
