Professor Joerg Schneider, Switzerland
On the occasion of the Annual Meetings of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering in Melbourne, Dr Manabu Ito, President of IABSE, presented on September 10, 2002, the Honorary Membership to Prof. Joerg Schneider for his outstanding services rendered to the Association, in particular as Vice-President of IABSE from 1993 to 2001.
Prof. Joerg Schneider, born in 1934 in Cologne, Germany, received his civil engineering degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich in 1958. He worked as an assistant at ETH Zurich from 1959 to 1963 and then joined Stahlton/BBRV, where he was involved in the development of prestressing and precasting systems and the design of concrete structures. Since 1967 he has been Professor of Structural Engineering at the ETH. His research interests focus on the safety and reliability of structures, with special emphasis on human error. In recent years, he has also become interested in risk analysis and the safety of transportation systems.
Joerg Schneider has been active in many committees at the ETH and in structural engineering associations. He has been a member of the Joint Committee on Structural Safety since 1979, serving as its President from 1990 to 1994. He was elected member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences in 1991 and received the title of Dr h.c. from the University of Applied Sciences, Vienna in 1998. After retirement from the ETH, Prof. Schneider joined a Consulting Engineer Office for Risk and Safety, as a part-time Consultant.
Prof. Schneider's commitments to IABSE have been important and numerous:
- in standing committees of IABSE e.g. Secretary of the Technical Committee (1979 -1987); Chairman of the Publications Committee (1979 - 1993); Member of the Administrative Committee (1977-1999) and Vice-President of IABSE from 1993 to 2001.
- in organising IABSE conferences, as member, secretary or chairman of organising or scientific committees in Europe, Canada and Japan.
- in developing the publication activity of IABSE in particular creating the new series "Structural Engineering Documents" in 1982; developing the quarterly "Structural Engineering International" - first issue 1991.
