Anton F. Steffen, Switzerland
Mr. Anton Steffen was appointed Honorary Member on September 21, 2000, at the Closing Ceremony of the Congress of the 'International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering'. President Klaus H. Ostenfeld presented the distinction to Mr Steffen in recognition of his outstanding contribution as Chairman of the Organising Committee of the 16th Congress in Lucerne "Structural Engineering for Meeting Transportation Challenges".
A Swiss citizen, Anton Steffen was born in 1938. He graduated 1963 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland. He has been active in teaching and research at Washington University, St. Louis, USA. Today he is Partner of A.F. + J. Steffen Consulting Engineers in Lucerne.
A citizen of Lucerne, committed, with many good ideas and the rights contacts, Mr Steffen was the perfect host and organiser. As Chairman of the Organising Committee he knew how to make the best use of the new Concert and Congress Centre. He understood to surround himself with a young and dynamic committee and to motivate its members, who seconded him with enthusiasm.
The Congress participants and accompanying persons, more than 1000 persons, congratulated him with applause at the presentation of the diploma at the Closing Ceremony.
Mr Steffen perfectly understood to underline one of the new commitments of IABSE, namely to promote the communication between the structural engineer and the broad public.
